The demon hunters within the Realm of Light were grieving. Lou, their leader, was killed by them in Sicily when his body was taken over by a demon. This has shook them up. Their team has been taken over by Michael, former head of the Italian team. Most affected by Lou’s death is Mandy. Lou pretty much raised her. She’s feisty and outspoken but can she accept Michael taking over Lou’s position?
During this battle Dalton spirits away Isabelle against the orders from Lou to kill her. He’s putting, not only his job but his life on the line by this action. But, he saw humanity in her even while the demon side of her ruled her body. He’s betting that she can control the demon, and he’s hoping that he can find a way to remove it.
Isabelle has demon blood in her. She didn’t know it until recently. The Sons of Darkness are after her but she’s fighting them with everything she can.
As Dalton and Isabelle work on saving her from the demon that lives within her, their attraction to each other becomes harder to deny. Can Dalton and Isabelle control the demon before the Realm’s hunters find them? Will they have a chance to explain or will they, as Isabelle fears, shot first?
This is a continuation of Jaci Burton’s Demon Hunter series. Things that happened in previous books have their impact on this book such as the big battle in Sicily. However, it is not necessary to have read the previous books in this series to enjoy this one. They would give you some background material but all needed information for this book is found in this book.
Two separate stories are going on at the same time, Michael and Mandy’s and Dalton and Isabelle’s. Dalton and Isabelle’s story is the primary story but Michael and Mandy’s is just as interesting and possibly the beginning of the next book in this series. Each set of characters has turmoil in their lives and ends with hot sex.
The characters are well developed giving you an insight into their motives and reasoning. Dalton has some selfish reasoning originally behind fleeing with Isabelle and fights against the feelings that he develops towards her. Isabelle is scared. Scared of the demons that are trying to take over her and scared of wanting Dalton. Mandy has just lost the man she looks at as a father. She wants to lash out but also wants to make him proud doing her job. Michael is the leader and as such needs to stay aloof but finds that it’s easier said than done. Each character is unique and interesting. Reading about how they change and their relationships change is festinating.
The action is fast paced and on going. You start jumping around countries like they’re stores at a mall, changing identities as fast as you change planes. Hunters are spread looking for Dalton and Isabelle only to find a new type of demon and one that looks human! Demons are attempting to sway Isabelle. Mandy is fighting her despair the only way she knows how. Action, loving and strategy keep you turning the page to see what next.
The world that Ms Burton has develop runs parallel to the world we live in. These good guys and bad guys operate around us without anyone the wiser. But she has the details down pat making this world believable. Could she know something the rest of us don’t?
I enjoyed this book. The emotions expressed by the characters felt honest. The dialog was real. Things weren’t sanitized or watered down. You could see the action and were there for the aftermath. Magic became alive and demons as well as angels can get in your face.
I will say that I may have enjoyed it a tiny bit more if I had read the previous books. Still, this book stands alone well and truly only peaked my interest in reading the rest.
