Heartbreaking, poetic, and desperately hopeful -- Lessons in French just might be Laura Kinsale's best yet.
Charming, desperate, and the so very French Trevelyn and wry Callie whose heart is for her animals -- they yanked me into their world from the very first page and didn't let go until the very end. I did think that Callie's disbelief in her own worth got a bit tiresome after a while, but I suppose no heroine can be perfect. The fun that those two get up to whilst still being deathly earnest was wonderful to behold.
The drama regarding Hubert alone kept me in stitches. I would have loved this book had it been twice as long, just so I could have read more of their story. It would have been lovely to have had more insight into the indomitable and frightening clever Madame and to have perhaps more stories of Callie and Trev's childhood escapades. The little bit of epilogue at the end was absolutely more tantalizing than satisfying.
I'll definitely be waiting for the next Laura Kinsale book.
