Following his wife’s death from a terrible motorcycle accident, Shane heads out of town to feel the healing wind on his face. Riding all-day and resting under the stars at night, Shane begins to let go of his grief.
Directed by the stranger, Shane rides into what he thinks is a campground by the ocean. He finds instead a Native American village headed by Chief Gray Owl. As we get to know the Chief and his family, especially daughter Tia, we see why Shane is reluctant to leave the camp. Shane’s friendship with Tia brings many surprises and challenges. The growing tension between Shane and Raven, the brave chosen to be Tia’s next husband, and the reappearance of the mysterious stranger, brings this story to a surprising climax.
Iron Horse Rider is a fast paced powerful story of love lost and love found. The opening poem “Riding in the Rain” sets the tone for a biker story that takes us on an emotional ride that never lets up. Kelly, Shane’s wife of ten years, is killed in a horrific motorcycle accident. After her funeral, Shane realizes he cannot return to their home. He takes off on a bike trip not knowing how far he will ride or how long he will be gone.
Adelle Laudan captures our attention from the opening sentence and does not let go. Shane’s pain is palpable and the reader shares his grief as he rides the mountain and coastal highways. A telling line in the story states, “He had nothing to live for and no reason to die.”
As Shane is crying out for help at the time of the accident, he notices a stranger wearing a wide-brimmed hat crouching beside his motorcycle. He appears to be attaching something to the swing arm of Shane’s bike; then disappears. The stranger reappears several times during the story, oddly when Shane most needs help.
Iron Horse Rider takes the reader on an amazing journey to another culture where Chief Gray Owl, his wife Noni, and daughter Tia, embrace the exhausted and grieving Shane. Tia lost her husband in a hunting accident the year before and understands what Shane is going through. Together, the family shows him the healing power of love and offers him an opportunity for a new start.
Who is the mysterious Sam who shows up at odd times? Why is this band of Native Americans living in wigwams and practicing the life style of their ancestors? Did Shane’s wild ride through the wind propel him into another world? All questions are answered in a rapid page-turner that, for this reader, ends all too soon.
Laudan has crafted a remarkable story of grief and love. We feel Shane’s grief and his loss rents our heart. Filled with vivid description and unexpected surprises; scene after scene we are carried along for a wild ride to a shocking finish.
