Boone Dalton lived on his one hundred sixty acre ranch with his young daughter, Annie in Carson, Oklahoma. Since Annie was a first grader who attended Carson Elementary School, Boone allowed the school to use his property for class outings. Annie’s teacher, Julia Seymour, was a new teacher to the school that year. She needed the job and a place to stay when she came to Carson. The school board hired her and since Boone was on the Board of Education he offered her to rent out the other vacant house on his property that his grandmother used to live in before she passed away. This worked out well for the both of them.
Since the school year was now coming to a close, Julia didn’t know what she was going to do with herself over the summer. She had no family to go visit and no place else to go. Frankly, she felt too safe in Carson and didn’t want to leave her safety net for fear of being noticed somewhere else.
Because Julia got along so well with the children, Boone propositioned her to start a summer camp for the children on his property. That way the children would be occupied during the day and staying out of trouble while their parents worked. This worked out well for Julia because it now gave her something to look forward to. She loved teaching and she loved these children as if they were her own.
As the summer was progressing, an attraction started happening between Boone and Julia. Though Julia was interested she felt as if she didn’t deserve such a decent and good looking guy like Boone. She was constantly fearful of her past coming back to haunt her again. So she made certain that her contact with Boone remained professional at all times. Boone wanted more and was curious as to why she was so hesitant to open up more about herself and her past. He felt that the best thing to do was call his friend, Chuck Harrison, who was a Private Investigator to search Julia’s background before getting involved with someone he really didn’t know. He wasn’t going to have another bad relationship like he did with his ex-wife, Stacy. One divorce was good enough for him. He wasn’t going through that again. He’d make certain the next person he would be with was right for not only himself, but most importantly, Annie. His daughter was his world and nothing was going to change that.
What did Chuck dig up when he did the investigation on Julia? Did Julia’s past finally come back to haunt her? How did Boone react when he found out the secrets from her past? How did the community react to the news? Did they allow Julia to stay in Carson after the secrets were revealed and did they still allow her to teach the children? Did finding out the truth about Julia’s past actually bring her and Boone closer together or further apart?
The author successfully penned a very riveting and touching story and you can’t help but fall in love with all the compelling characters. The transformation of Boone and Julia throughout the story just tugged at my heart. I found myself feeling extremely compassionate toward Julia and all she’d been through, but I also found myself equally understanding of Boone and his reaction toward the whole situation. Ms. Shay made me feel as if I was another character in the story seeing things through my eyes as if I was there. The story is a definite keeper in my library. I assure you that you won’t be disappointed picking this one up and adding it to your library. I would definitely read more stories from Ms. Shay.
