Vanessa Beaumont will do whatever it takes to make certain her thoroughbred, Ransom, isn’t taken away from her by her slimy ex-husband, Trevor. Even though the divorce paperwork says she has full ownership of the horse, she knows that won’t stop him from trying to sell Ransom to pay off his ongoing gambling debt.

One day, she quickly loads Ransom into his horse trailer and heads to the only place where she thinks they will both be safe. Driving on some back roads to her girlfriend’s house in Pennsylvania, the weather takes a turn for the worse and complicates her drive even more. As she is trying to keep control of her vehicle and the horse trailer, she notices too late that there are three deer in front of her.   Frantically trying to stop her truck, she unfortunately hits one of the deer head on causing a major problem now for her and Ransom. Luckily a nearby neighbor, Riley Whitaker, who just happens to be Jessup, Ohio’s Sheriff, hears the screeching of the brakes and the shriek of an injured animal. Without even hesitating, he immediately jumps in his truck to aid in any way possibly. If things aren’t bad enough, the horse trailer is now hanging over the edge of a steep embankment and with one wrong move, Ransom could plummet to his death.

Does Riley make it on time to help save Ransom? What is Vanessa going to do since her plans seem to be derailed for a short time? Does Trevor ever find out where Vanessa and Ransom are? Does Vanessa decide to open up completely to let Riley know why she is so anxious to leave Jessup as soon as possible?

This was a fabulous story that I just didn’t want to come to an end. From the very first paragraph to the very last, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. As I read this story, I experienced such a roller coaster ride of emotions. My heart went out to Vanessa for worrying more about Ransom’s well being than her own and for wanting to get out of Jessup as fast as possible. I am a sucker for horse stories and Ms. Cary did a wonderful job with this one. I loved how the author portrayed Riley Whitaker as being the perfect person to help Vanessa through this nightmare of a situation that she was in. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it to all readers. This one is a definite keeper in my library!
