Victoria West grew up in a Mormon home in Utah. Her family pretty much disowned her when she married a non-Mormon doctor and moved to California. Victoria was a nurse and they had plans for the perfect marriage, which came crashing down when Victoria’s husband was killed. The money she received after his death allowed her to start Fantasy Mountain, a place where sexual desires meet reality. Fantasy Mountain is located in the mountains of Wyoming and can basically be reached by helicopter. This was the play ground for the rich and famous. Victoria seldom participated in the fantasies though she did believe in sex without commitment or feelings.
Britt is her right hand man, partner and the on site lawyer at Fantasy Mountain. Victoria and Britt have had sex but Victoria makes it a practice to only have a professional relationship with those she works with. This frustrates Britt who would like nothing more than to marry Victoria. His current fiancé looks like her when they first met. Still, with plans to get married, Britt has more feelings for Victoria than should be allowed if only she would let him in.
This story takes elements from so many parts of today’s society and puts it into a story bringing it to life. Many women are tragically and unrepentantly made widows at young ages. This experience does change them and makes many wary about loving again. It also incorporates the business world where it is smart to keep business and pleasure separate. Many people would look at this type of business and think porn and badly of its owner, which is also brought up in this story and how those prejudices can be misleading. Though these issues and more are in the story, there is no preaching or soapbox speeches. They are simply woven into the plot as a reality that needs to be dealt with giving the story the feel of reality.
The characters are given backgrounds, families and obligations that allows the reader to really know them and understand some of their motives. The families and friends around out the characters’ personalities so that it doesn’t seem as though their lives start and end with Fantasy Mountain. Britt has to travel to London several times due to family problems. Victoria deals with no contact with her family except her twin sister. Life isn’t perfect and families aren’t either. These problems make Victoria and Britt seem like they could be your friend or neighbor.
Overall, this book was good. The fantasies that were described were believable. The characters were well written. The situations, both personal and business, were realistic. Almost all of the ends were tied up by the end of the book except for a glaring one with the helicopter pilot. I’m not sure if this is to leave an opening for another book, though I would think one on that particular loose string would be a murder mystery rather than an romance, or just an oversight. I liked the characters, plot, twists and turns. I enjoyed the fantasies and the realities.
There are sexual scenes that may make some readers uncomfortable. Fantasy Mountain is a place for adult fantasies and not all of them are heterosexual or one on one.
