Ciana:
Jay, I want to thank you for taking time from your busy
schedule to do this interview. I’ve been a fan ever
since I saw you in Streetfighter,
so this is a real honor for me. When you won Best
Actor for your role in UnBowed at the
American Indian Film Festival I was thrilled. That is still one of the
most thought-provoking, socially significant films I’ve
seen.
Now,
there’s a lot that I want people to know about you, so why
don’t we start with your professional life? You’ve had a rich
and diverse career.
What was your favorite role and
why?
Jay:
For
me each of my films are a segment of
my life. I spend as much time as I have to research and
prepare for each role and I go through a
transformation. So, it's hard to say which is my favorite,
but, I would say The Missing was close to my heart, as I got
to work with Ron Howard. The cast is amazing and I got
to portray an Apache in the days when they would ride as
freely as the wind and in some ways it was a tribute to my
lost heritage. It was the first time an Apache was seen on the
sliver screen who could laugh
and cry and show the range of human emotions that were
usually reserved for the white heroes. I know I hit my
mark, when I saw the film with 600 Apache elders on the
rez, in
New
Mexico, and they all loved
it.
Ciana:
I have to say that you were wonderful in the role, and
I was very grateful that the film allowed you to show a wide
range of emotions.
Which character that you’ve played, did you identify
with the most closely?
Jay:
Each
of my roles carry a piece of me in
them. With that said, I would say what Waka Mani goes
through, in Unbowed, is not that
different from what I went through, in my English boarding
schools.
Ciana:
That’s interesting, and certainly prepared you for the
role you would later play in life when you were cast in Unbowed. Tell me, do you
prefer action or
dramatic roles?
Jay:
Action without drama, makes no
sense. I will always prefer a good dramatic role
over just an action flick, although, I have been
known to do both. (Chuckle)
Ciana:
What would be your dream role?
Jay:
I have made Hollywood
notice me, over the last decade, with some interesting supporting
roles. I feel I have laid a solid foundation
for my career, but, now I would like to show I
can do any type of role. I am one of the only multi ethnic
actors who has managed to portray more
than just one race on film.
Hollywood
does not like that
they want you to fit in where they want you to, and I am all about
breaking the rules. I am looking for contemporary role that
has range,
I really don't care if it's drama or romantic comedy, I would
like to surprise people.
Ciana:
Do you want to
direct or produce?
What type of project would you be drawn
to?
Jay:
I
see myself as a modern day storyteller and I am already a
writer and have sold several
of my screenplays. I am interested in all aspects of movie
making and I do see myself directing
someday soon. I have already been approached to be a producer
on some up coming projects
and I did help my directors in
Cold Mountain and The Missing in making
some of their final choices
so I would say yes and I would like to make a movie
which moves the audiences in a mystical way, makes them think again about
something they may have taken for granted.
Ciana:
Would you like
to do a romantic film?
Jay:
I already have. Unbowed was a
beautiful love story that highlighted that
love can, and
will, survive no matter how bad the odds are. It was the
story of forbidden love. I think I should do
more, as to this day, I get so much fan mail about this film
and many of my fans love to see me in a romantic lead
again.
Ciana:
Yes, and you can count me among the women who are eager
to see you as a romantic lead. It goes without
saying that you’re one of the most beautiful men in the
world. Women
fantasize about you, put posters of you on their walls, and
dream about you and the characters you play. How do you handle this
kind of female adoration?
Jay:
One of the most beautiful men in the World?
Hay, take it easy, baby,(sexy
laugh) You know, beauty can be a
gift or a curse, it all depends on how one uses it. My
looks have always gotten me a lot of
attention, no matter what country or what age. I have always
stood out, but, I have learned that charm and a good sense of
humor will get you a lot further. I think for years men have
been mesmerized by beautiful women and now it's your turn. I
think the human body and our sexuality is a very powerful
force and looking at anything that makes you feel good... is
good! (sexy
laugh). I remember so many
women writing me asking, why I am not in the people's 50 most
beautiful people in the world and I would just say I was
number 51, I just missed out. Damn.
Ciana:
Well, you definitely get my vote. From all I know of
you, I feel safe in saying that you seem to be very passionate about
life. What
would you say is your greatest passion?
Jay:
Passion
for Life, the magic that exist all around us, but, most of the
time we are so disconnected to see it or feel it. You know
it when you kiss someone, who you love, it rocks you to your core. You know it when
you hold your baby for the first time or you watch your
young son play with his new puppy, It's there when we
show the higher emotions in life. Compassion is
the highest form of love self sacrifice as our
soldiers are doing in the name of freedom. Forgiveness.
I just love people, all people, and that is
why I'm passionate about my work, it takes me to
far corners of the earth and I meet a creative
group, who I will get to know like a family and then
it's over, which is what the Tibetan's call, the
law of impermanence. Nothing lasts, so we must
enjoy and
appreciate today.
Ciana:
I agree with you completely. Now, if you don’t mind, I’d
like to touch on your humanitarian involvements. Such
as the Adopt-A-Native-Elder Program. A lot of people may
not be familiar with this wonderful
program, so I’d like to take time to say a few words about
it.

Ciana:
Now, since this interview is going to be read
predominantly by women, I have to ask some questions relating
to romance and passion.
I hope you don’t mind. Do you consider yourself a passionate man?
Jay:
I
can't do anything if I am not passionate about it. It fuels
me, drives me, and motivates me. I am all about passion and
when I hold you and love you... you will know
it.
(Note
to the ladies reading this. There is NO way under
the shining sun that you can hear these words come out of
Jay’s mouth and NOT go into serious melt-down. Trust me. He’s as potent as a
nuclear reaction.)
Ciana:
Do you have a “leading lady” in your
life?
Jay:
I was married for 12 years, but, I am single now and I
have no leading lady, as of now. Although, there are many supporting
ca
st, in the waiting. LOL.
Ciana:
What’s the most romantic evening you can
imagine?
Jay:
Two of us... on a beach a fire burning to the side...
But That's the setting... The most important ingredient is a woman
who challenges my mind and body in more ways than one. To
be honest it really does not matter where I am if I have the
chemistry with her. I love to travel to an exotic location
like
Maui
... watching shooting stars on
a warm night just feeling the night together and not
disturbing each other yet... Looking at each other but maybe
no need for words, it's a silent dance of two souls becoming
one in an erotic physical encounter...
(Note: Emphasis on MELT
DOWN. Ladies,
this man’s power is NOT just in his looks,
and believe me that’s enough to make you weak in the
knees. This is a
man who has power that comes from within – extremely sensual,
sensitive and spiritual.
It’s really overwhelming.)
Ciana:
What is the first thing you notice about a
woman?
Jay:
Her body, how she carries herself, followed by her face
and her eyes.
Ciana
What do you think is the first thing women notice about
you?
Jay:
I am not too sure I have heard them all. LOL. I would say my face or eyes. You
should ask the ladies that.
Ciana:
What do you feel is your most
attractive trait or physical attribute?
Jay:
I
have real Knowledge about many subjects and several esoteric
secrets that I only share with my most intimate
friends.
Physical attribute... I am put together like Exotic
Dangerous Cat... Agile and
powerful... I have rhythm and grace... yet I
can explode with tenacity.
Ciana:
Where would you most like to take a special woman for a
unique weekend that she would never forget?
Jay:
I love Exotic locations like
Maui
,
Thailand
or
Spain
Ciana:
What is your favorite scent?
Jay:
The sent of exotic flowers, sweet yet spicy too.
I also love the smell of fresh bread cooking.
Old school. (smile)
(Okay,
yes I did have the sudden urge to master the art of bread
making, but alas my
talents are NOT in the kitchen.)
Ciana:
Your favorite food?
Jay:
Breakfast. I love tea and consider myself a
tea connoisseur and I make a great tasting breakfast
just incase you wake up with me.
Ciana:
Whew. It’s
a bit warm in here.
Let’s see where was I? Oh yes. What’s your favorite
activity?
Jay:
Making love of course. LOL. Okay hiking with my dogs and
wolves deep in a forest is a close
second.
Ciana:
What’s your favorite indulgence?
Jay:
I love to just kick back on my bed with all kinds of
healthy junk food like chocolate covered Gogi
berries and several good movies.
Especially when it's raining out
side.
Ciana:
Sounds lovely. I have a life philosophy
that
every moment is an opportunity to give something of
ourselves. That each moment is a blessing and to waste any of
our moments in negative pursuits is when we fail in
life.
Do you have a personal philosophy you live by and if so
what it is?
Jay:
Each sun rise is a new opportunity to try
again ... for what was impossible yesterday... may be
possible today. I don't want to live
in the know and have all the answers, I love the mystery of life
that is where God is. The Lakhota say Wakan Tanka
which means the Great Mystery. or
Spirit.
I
love what Gandhi said...
The
past is history
The
future is mystery
This
moment now is a gift
That's
why it's called the Present...
Ciana:
That’s something we can all take to heart. Jay, if who
you are could be summed up in one paragraph, what would it
say?
Jay:
Enigma?
Ciana:
Hmmm, a mystery for us to ponder. I like that. What’s
the one thing you’ve never done that you hope you get the
chance to do?
Jay:
Fly a jet. Or go to space and be able to look back and
see our beautiful blue planet and how small we really are in
the cosmic scale. Our life is like a tick of a clock when you
think about it. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Ciana:
I’m with you on that. So, tell
me. What is the
one thing you’d like for people to know and remember about
you?
Jay:
That no matter what I achieve I remain one with the
people.( I never read my own
press release. (chuckle)) I guess the first step
in becoming immortal is to live a life worth
remembering.
Ciana:
We should all be so lucky, to live a life worth
remembering. I
have no doubt that you will fulfill that goal. Well, I guess that
about covers it.
Jay, I
so appreciate your patience and generosity in granting me this
interview. It has
been such a marvelous experience. in closing, I’d like wish you great success
and happiness in all you do and hope that in your life
you see all your dreams manifest into reality.
It's been an honor
Jay:
Thank
you for the opportunity. With all my heart.
In
closing, I’d like to let you, our readers, know that not only
did I find Jay to be a talented, and obviously physically
beautiful man, but a man of depth and great spirit, with a
genuine love of life, and compassion for his fellow man. When I say that Jay is a man who has it all, I
truly mean
that. His physical beauty is
matched by the beauty of his spirit.
This
